WHAT WE DO

Acumenica is a cloud-first, technology-driven accountancy firm with a friendly face. Our speciality is providing accounting and tax services to contractors, freelancers, consultants and small businesses throughout the UK.

We’re not a faceless sausage-factory accountant though. You’ll always be able to contact your accountant and will have access to them by phone or email, and even, if you can believe it, in person too!

All our clients receive access to our award winning cloud software package, FreeAgent. Raise invoices, manage your expenses, reconcile your bank 24/7 or anywhere you like using the mobile app.

We are proud to have been the FreeAgent’s first platinum partner in Scotland and we continue to work closely with them. The whole team is FreeAgent certified and able to provide you with an unparalleled FreeAgent support experience.

If your business has more complex needs, we are also certified partners in Xero, Dext and a host of other solutions.

  • Clients will generally, although not always, required contractors to take out insurance - generally Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, Employers’ Liability. The level of insurance and the type of insurance that is required usually depends on the client or agency and will generally be specified in the contract schedule schedule.

Even if you don’t have a contractual requirement to carry insurance, it’s a good idea to have it. We’ve partnered with industry experts Kingsbridge to simplify the process for you.

The Kingsbridge contractor policy is specifically designed for contractors like you.

  • We take tax investigations very seriously and whilst we always ensure returns are filed in a manner that should limit the possibility of an enquiry HMRC select many cases each year for random enquiries. No-one can afford to be complacent! Obviously if you are selected for an enquiry we would aim to settle it quickly and with minimal fuss and disruption to you and your business and would aim to minimise any additional tax liabilities. However, answering all of HMRC’s questions could be very time consuming and some investigations can take several months to deal with. As a result our costs of dealing with HMRC’s queries can be significant.

Our highly-trained specialists are experienced in dealing with all forms of tax investigation and have detailed knowledge of the respective rights and powers of the taxpayer and HMRC. We can guide you through the process and negotiate directly with HMRC to ensure that tax, interest charges and penalties are minimised.

However, it is our belief that the number of tax enquiries will increase, and to provide peace of mind to our clients, Acumenica, working together with Croner TaxWise, can offer you cover against such an investigation. Through what we believe to be the best cover available, Croner can offer you an insurance that will pay up to £100,000 towards your accountants’ fees in the event of a tax investigation with no policy excess.

Our Tax Investigation Insurance covers all of the following (and more):

    -Full Enquiries

    -Aspect Enquiries

    -Business Inspection Notices

    -VAT

    -PAYE/NIC

    -IR35 disputes

The premium for a standard limited company is just £179.00 per year.

  • Getting approved for a mortgage as a contractor isn’t always easy and requires generally requires the knowledge of a specialist broker.

You’re in safe hands with Professional Contractor Mortgages. • With the repeal of the 2017 and 2021 reforms, it’s now even more important that a contractor’s status determination is correct.

We can carry out an in-house assessment of your status. We’ll look at the terms of engagement regarding Control; Substitution; Mutuality if Obligation; Right of Dismissal and whether your engagement would suggest that you are In Business On Your Own Account.

Having a IR35 contract assessment is an excellent way of demonstrating that you have operated ‘due diligence’ in determining whether you operate outside of IR35 or not. This can reduce the risk of penalties being applied if your status is subsequently challenged by HMRC.

Should your contract require further expert opinion, we will refer you to our experienced partners in this field.
